Our Internship Programme
We have an ongoing cooperation with Amsterdam University College (https://www.auc.nl). Each June, students from AUC’s Information Track with an emphasis on machine learning have the opportunity to follow a month-long Internship Programme with us.
The programme begins with a one-day workshop where the students get an overview of the insurance industry and how modern methods of Data Science can be applied. The students are then divided into teams, each of which is given an applied, real-world project. Each team has access to one of our Data Scientists and a junior for guidance and feedback throughout the month. We close the month with a final results and presentations day, concluding with beers and pizzas (COVID regulations permitting) outdoors at the Startup Village (weather permitting).
Even pre-COVID, we developed a set of methods for working and communication which are flexible enough so that we can work together in the office, completely remotely or anywhere along the spectrum between the two. As a result, we are fully prepared to run the June 2021 Internship Programme remotely. We hope however that, with COVID regulations being relaxed gradually, we can run it in person at the Startup Village, taking whatever precautions are required.
Our offices are located within the Startup Village (pictured above) in the Amsterdam Science Park. The village is made from refurbished shipping containers, reconstructed and welded together with garden laid on the roofs for insulation and seating during the summer.
What do our Interns have to say?

This internship was overall a great success for me personally, as I was able to conclude the project I worked on with concrete results and provide an action-plan for the steps that MLP should take moving forward.
The programme has been very helpful in providing me insight and understanding into a potential career in the field of data science. Working closely with seasoned industry professionals has broadened my knowledge of the sector, both in terms of possible career paths and human relations.
I’ve noticed my programming skills consistently improving throughout the internship. Constantly working with large amounts of data through Python has increased my ability to quickly solve problems.
I received lots of useful feedback throughout the course of this internship and have done my best to take it all on board and incorporate it into my life and my work. The feedback gave me more confidence in my own abilities and aided in showing me where I can improve.

I had a fantastic time. Being in constant exchange and receiving feedback almost on a daily basis from two highly qualified as well as experienced supervisors was ideal. The topics and ideas that we discussed made us feel like the work we do has meaningful implications for the whole data science field. The scope of the project was clear and gave us both structure and room for our own creativity.
On top of this the open team dynamic allowed me to really be myself. The location of the office is awesome to for someone very interested in entrepreneurship.

I was part of a team of students assigned the role of ‘Junior Data Scientist,’ who programmed under the supervision of Senior Data Scientists. For this, I explored, compared, manipulated the data set and focused on finding mathematical approaches by creating functions to solve my tasks.
MLP taught me an important lesson that I knew but had not internalized through experience: sticking with tasks even if they require effort, are slow in the beginning, and are difficult will often yield a lot of knowledge, skill, understanding, and a sense of accomplishment and confidence in navigating these tasks.
Overall, MLP provided a safe and welcoming environment for me to learn and grow with both theoretical and practical approaches to real life challenges.

This internship gave me an amazing opportunity to apply the skills I learned at university in a professional setting. However, I also feel like I was indeed an asset to the company as an intern, and I really think that they all feel the same way. We really contributed to the company because we worked on a task that is really sensitive and topical in today’s world: Data ethics. It is an easy subject to overlook when you’re busy working on clients’ demands, so we were happy to look into it and raise awareness about it. My supervisors were always there for me and helped me make sense of my results and findings, and were always open to giving me feedback on my presentation skills as well.
